A test is a collection of questions that focusses on one chemistry concept or skill, these questions are designed to give you practice in answering questions on that one concept or skill.

An exam is a set of questions that are based on one chemistry concept or skill but may require knowledge of other concepts or skills as well in order to answer the question, just like the questions you might get in an exam. For this reason exam questions may seem more difficult than test questions.

A learning activity may be a crossword puzzle, a matching activity or a game. In order to play a game you will need to successfully answer questions on a particular chemistry topic.

Each test and exam contains a number of questions and for each test and exam question there is a worked solution. You get access to the "correct" answer immediately, you do not need to complete a whole test or exam before you can see the solution. In this way you can apply what you have learnt to the next question.

Wherever possible there is link from the tests and exams to the relevant AUS-e-TUTE tutorial. There are also links on the AUS-e-TUTE tutorial pages that will take you to the first test and/or exam in the set of tests and exams on that topic. There is also a "search for a test or exam" option to help you easily find tests and exams on a particular skill, concept or topic.

AUS-e-TUTE members also receive a quarterly pdf newsletter, AUS-e-NEWS, containing information relevant to students and teachers of chemistry.

What sort of questions are in the tests and exams?

For each topic you will find multiple choice questions, and questions requiring short or long answers. The questions and answers can include graphs, tables, charts, diagrams, calculations, equations. In fact, AUS-e-TUTE tries to provide a broad cross-section of question types for each topic.

You can view a sample of the question types here.

How can I join?

Becoming an AUS-e-TUTE member is easy. You can either:

AUS-e-TUTE membership for individual students or teachers costs $50 (Australian dollars) per person per year, less than $1 per week, for unlimited access to the AUS-e-TUTE Test Centre. (You can convert this to a another currency here). If you joined on the 1st of May 2005, your membership would expire on the 30th April 2006.

AUS-e-TUTE members receive their own username and password to access the Test Centre, this means that you can access the Test Centre from any computer at any time. There is no software to install.

School Membership and Site Licences

AUS-e-TUTE is a great resource for chemistry teachers to use. You can set tests and/or exams from the Test Centre for students to complete during class or as homework. Because each question comes with a worked solution the students do not need to rely on the teacher to provide answers, allowing students to become independent, autonomous learners. This also means that you can set test and exam questions for when you are away from the class, the teacher replacing you need not be a specialist chemistry teacher in order for the students to be learning chemistry.

AUS-e-TUTE offers special low cost "package deals" for School membership, similar to a site licence. Each of your students and teachers will be provided with a username and password to access the AUS-e-TUTE Test Centre for one year so each person can access the Test Centre from any computer at any time.

AUS-e-TUTE is currently trialling "School Pages", an area where teachers can set up a calendar of tutorials, tests, exams and/or activities to be completed by each student in class. As each test, exam or activity is completed by a student, the teacher receives notification of this.
